Entering Georgia from the US in 2026

US citizens do not need a visa for Georgia - you can stay up to 365 days on a single entry, one of the most generous visa-free regimes anywhere. Since 2026, one condition has been added: valid medical insurance.

Visa-free for up to 1 year
US citizens enter Georgia on a valid passport, no visa, and may stay up to 365 days per entry.
Flights from the US
There are no direct flights; travelers connect through Istanbul, Doha, Munich, Warsaw or Dubai to Tbilisi, with some routes via Kutaisi or Batumi.
Insurance is now mandatory
From January 1, 2026 every visitor must hold medical insurance that meets Decree 602. It is checked at the border alongside your passport.
What they check on arrival
Your passport and a Decree 602 policy. The Cover PDF is shown straight from your phone - no need to print it.

What your policy must include under Decree 602

  • Coverage of at least 30,000 GEL (~ 11,000 USD) per traveler
  • Valid for your whole stay in Georgia - from entry to exit, with no gaps
  • Digital PDF or printed - both are accepted
  • In English or Georgian - the languages Decree 602 accepts. Cover issues the PDF in English and Georgian on every order, exactly the languages border officers read.

Why American travelers choose Cover

Cover is a Georgian service that issues Decree 602-compliant policies in minutes. Here is what that means for you in practice.

A policy from a licensed Georgian insurer

Policies are issued by Unison, an insurer licensed in Georgia. Every claim is handled in Georgia, where your trip actually happens - not through a distant US carrier.

Instant PDF, ready in 2 minutes

No medical questionnaire and no minimum trip length. The PDF arrives by email within seconds - open it on your phone and show it at the border. The same process works for a 2-day trip or a full year.

One order for the whole family

Insure up to 50 travelers in a single order - each gets their own PDF with their name and passport details. Groups of 2 or more get a discount.

Pay by US card

Visa and Mastercard issued by US banks work normally, and so do Apple Pay and Google Pay. Prices are shown in US dollars.

What to do at the border

  1. Open the policy PDF on your phone in advance - it works offline, and connectivity at border points is often weak
  2. Show it together with your passport as soon as insurance is requested
  3. Be ready to briefly state the purpose of your trip and where you are staying - these are standard questions
  4. If insurance is not requested, that is normal - checks are random. But holding it is mandatory: without a policy you can be refused entry or fined

Staying longer (30+ days)

Many Americans base themselves in Georgia for months - remote work, slow travel, or extended trips. A single Cover policy can cover up to 365 days in one trip. Our long-term insurance page explains how it works: a fixed daily rate, the option to extend, and the 183-day tax-residency rule.

Frequently asked questions

Does Cover insurance work across all of Georgia?

Yes. The policy is valid throughout Georgia within its internationally recognized borders, including all airports and regions. Coverage starts at 00:00 on the start date shown in the policy - if you cross the border after that moment, you are already insured.

Do US citizens need a visa for Georgia?

No. US citizens travel to Georgia visa-free and may stay up to 365 days on a single entry. Since January 1, 2026 you do need valid medical insurance that meets Decree 602, which is checked at the border.

What happens if I enter Georgia without insurance?

From 2026, a Decree 602 policy is required on entry. Without one you risk being refused entry or fined. Checks are carried out at random in practice, but the requirement is real. The safest move is to buy a policy on cover.ge before you fly.

Does the policy cover flare-ups of chronic conditions?

No. A Decree 602 policy covers only emergency medical care for sudden conditions that arise in Georgia. Flare-ups of known chronic illnesses (diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, etc.) are excluded. If you regularly receive treatment for such a condition, buy a separate international policy before you travel.

Can I buy one policy for my family?

Yes. On the checkout page enter the number of travelers (up to 50), and each one receives their own PDF with their name and passport details. The price is calculated per traveler, but groups of 2 or more get a discount.

Which currency am I charged in?

US visitors see prices in US dollars. Your card is charged in the displayed currency; your bank applies its usual rate if your account is in another currency.

Is travel insurance mandatory to enter Georgia?

Yes. From January 1, 2026 every visitor to Georgia, including US citizens, must hold valid medical insurance covering at least 30,000 Georgian lari (about 11,000 USD) for the whole stay. The requirement is set by Government of Georgia Decree No. 602 and checked at the border with your documents.

Do I need insurance for Georgia in 2026?

Yes. US citizens enter Georgia visa-free, but from January 1, 2026 the border also checks for medical insurance under Decree 602. The policy must cover at least 30,000 GEL, be valid for all your trip dates with no gaps, and be issued in English or Georgian.

How much does travel insurance for Georgia cost?

Cover costs 3.50 USD per adult per day, so a 7-day trip is about 24.50 USD per person. Groups of 5 or more travelers get an automatic 10% discount. The total is shown in US dollars before payment.

How do I buy travel insurance for Georgia?

Open cover.ge on any device, enter your trip dates and number of travelers, and pay by Visa or Mastercard. The Decree 602-compliant PDF arrives by email within seconds and can be shown at the border from your phone. There is no medical questionnaire and no minimum trip length.
