Georgia Entry Rules for Indians in 2026: Visa, Documents, Insurance
Entry to Georgia for Indian citizens in 2026 comes down to three things: a passport, the right visa (or a qualifying visa from another country), and a travel insurance policy that the border officer can read. Insurance is the one genuinely new rule - since 1 January 2026 every foreign visitor is checked for a valid policy under Decree No. 602.
This article covers the entry rules only: what visa path applies to an Indian passport, which documents to prepare, how long you can stay, and what immigration asks. If you want the full trip - flights, costs, itinerary - see our complete guide to travel from India to Georgia.
Quick answer: what Indians need to enter Georgia
Three things:
- A passport valid for at least 6 months on the date of entry, with a blank page for the stamp.
- A visa - an Indian passport is not on Georgia's visa-free list, so you need either a Georgian e-Visa or a qualifying visa from another country (see below).
- Travel insurance with at least 30,000 GEL of cover for the whole stay - the Decree 602 requirement, in force since 1 January 2026.
Do Indians need a visa for Georgia?
In most cases, yes. India is not among the 98 countries that enter Georgia visa-free, so Indian passport holders need a visa. There are two paths:
- Georgian e-Visa - apply online at evisa.gov.ge, upload your passport, get approval by email (usually a few business days), and print or save the PDF. The e-Visa is the standard route for most Indian tourists.
- Visa-free with a qualifying visa - if you hold a valid, used or unused multiple-entry visa or residence permit from the US, UK, EU/Schengen, Canada, Australia, Japan, or Israel (among others), you can enter Georgia without a separate Georgian visa. Confirm your exact eligibility on the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal at geoconsul.gov.ge before booking.
Either way, the length of stay follows the visa issued. There is no automatic one-year stay for Indian passports the way there is for visa-free nationals.
Documents at the border
The officer will always check:
- Passport - 6+ months validity, blank page for the stamp
- e-Visa printout or PDF on your phone (or the qualifying foreign visa, if you use that path)
- Insurance policy - a PDF on your phone or a printout, in English or Georgian
They may also ask for (prepare these, show on request):
- Hotel booking or the address where you will stay
- Return or onward ticket
- Proof of funds - a card or bank statement showing you can cover the trip
Insurance is a mandatory entry condition from 2026
Since 1 January 2026 every visitor to Georgia, Indian citizens included, must hold travel insurance under Decree 602. Entry can be refused without a valid policy - it is checked at the immigration desk before you are stamped in.
Policy requirements:
- At least 30,000 GEL (roughly 11,000 USD, or about 9.3 lakh INR) of cover per person
- Valid for every day of the stay in Georgia, with no gaps
- Issued in English or Georgian - there is no Hindi-language compliance path
- A PDF on your phone or a printout - both are accepted
Policies from Indian insurers (HDFC Ergo, ICICI Lombard, Bajaj Allianz, Tata AIG) can meet the coverage amount on paper, but a Georgian border officer cannot always verify an unfamiliar Indian policy quickly. The safer route is a Georgia-issued policy: Cover for Indian travelers is bought online in a couple of minutes, costs under 30 USD per adult for a typical week, and arrives by email right after payment - together with a border card that is easy to show the officer.
When to buy. Do not leave it until the airport: coverage starts at 24:00 of the start date, and anything in the first 6 hours after purchase is excluded. Buy at least 12 hours before departure - the morning of the flight is the latest safe window.
Which border crossings Indians can use
Indians arrive almost entirely by air, through any official Georgian crossing:
- Airports: Tbilisi (TBS) and Kutaisi (KUT) are the usual arrival points, mostly on one-stop routes via the Gulf (Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi), Istanbul, or Central Asia
- Land borders with Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey - relevant only if you arrive overland from a neighboring country on a wider Caucasus trip
Abkhazia and South Ossetia are not entry points. Georgia treats these as occupied territories; entering Georgia through them breaks Georgian law and leads to an entry ban. Use only official crossings.
What officers ask at passport control
Standard questions are the purpose of your visit, where you will stay, and how long you are staying. Keep your answers short and concrete: "tourism, hotel in Tbilisi, ten days." Have your e-Visa, insurance PDF, hotel booking, and return ticket in one folder on your phone so you are not searching while the officer waits.
The decision to admit always rests with the border officer, as in any country. A complete set of documents and calm answers keep extra questions to a minimum.
How long can Indians stay in Georgia
Your stay follows the visa you hold. A Georgian e-Visa is issued for a defined period; entry on a qualifying foreign visa follows the terms set out by Georgian rules. Unlike visa-free nationals, Indian passport holders do not get an automatic 365-day stay - check the validity printed on your visa and do not overstay it.
If your dates change while you are in Georgia and your insurance ends before you plan to leave, you can extend the policy online without leaving the country or buying a new one.
Frequently asked questions
Do Indian citizens need a visa for Georgia in 2026?
In most cases, yes. India is not on Georgia's visa-free list, so Indian passport holders need a Georgian e-Visa (apply at evisa.gov.ge) - or they can enter visa-free if they hold a valid multiple-entry visa or residence permit from the US, UK, EU/Schengen, Canada, Australia, Japan, or Israel. Confirm your status at geoconsul.gov.ge before booking.
Is travel insurance required even if I have an e-Visa?
Yes. The e-Visa and the insurance are separate requirements. The e-Visa portal does not ask for an insurance upload, but Decree 602 is enforced at the border: from 1 January 2026 every visitor needs a policy of at least 30,000 GEL, regardless of visa type.
Can I enter Georgia with a US or Schengen visa instead of a Georgian e-Visa?
Yes. Indian passport holders with a valid (used or unused) multiple-entry visa or residence permit from the US, UK, EU/Schengen, and several other countries can enter Georgia visa-free for the period allowed under that route. Verify your exact case at geoconsul.gov.ge.
How much is travel insurance for Georgia from India?
A Decree 602-compliant policy from a Georgia-based provider costs under 30 USD per adult for a typical week, roughly 2,000-2,500 INR. It is paid by international Visa/Mastercard or crypto and arrives by email within seconds.
What is the penalty for arriving without insurance?
There is no fine as such - without a valid policy you are simply not allowed through. The check happens at passport control before you enter, so the policy must be bought in advance, not after landing.
Can I buy the insurance at the airport on arrival?
Technically the policy is issued online from your phone in minutes, but the first 6 hours after purchase are excluded and cover only starts at 24:00 of the start date. Buy at least 12 hours before departure.
Can I enter Georgia through Abkhazia or South Ossetia?
No. Entering Georgia through Abkhazia or South Ossetia counts as illegal border crossing and leads to an entry ban. Use only official crossings: the Tbilisi, Kutaisi, and Batumi airports or the land borders with Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey.
In short
- Indians usually need a visa: a Georgian e-Visa, or visa-free entry with a qualifying US/UK/EU/Schengen visa.
- Documents at the border: passport (6+ months), visa/e-Visa, and insurance of at least 30,000 GEL under Decree 602.
- Insurance is mandatory since 1 January 2026 - no policy, no entry.
- The policy must be in English or Georgian - a Georgia-issued Cover policy removes doubt at the border.
- Buy insurance at least 12 hours before departure - the first 6 hours after purchase are not covered.
- Enter only through official crossings: airports or the land borders with Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey.
