Who needs student health insurance in Georgia

Foreign nationals enrolled at Georgian universities — for full degrees or single-semester exchange — are required to hold valid health insurance for the duration of their studies. This is separate from Decree 602 tourist travel insurance and is tailored to long-stay academic residence. The requirement applies to undergraduate, masters, and PhD students, as well as visiting exchange students. Most universities verify the policy at the start of each academic year and will not complete registration without it.

What student health insurance covers

A compliant policy covers medical treatment, accident cover, dental emergencies, and medical evacuation for the full academic year. Unlike short-stay tourist insurance capped at 30,000 GEL, student policies typically carry higher annual limits and include outpatient care and prescription cover. The policy is issued in your name, valid at any accredited Georgian medical facility, and accepted by university administrations as proof of insurance when you enrol.

When to buy — before or after enrolment

Buy the policy before your first day of registration. Universities require the insurance certificate as part of the registration package, alongside your passport, visa, and admission letter. Arriving on campus without it usually means a trip to a local agency, which is slower and often more expensive than buying online in advance. If you arrive mid-year as an exchange student, the policy can be adjusted to cover only the months you are enrolled.

Frequently asked questions

Is health insurance required at all Georgian universities?

Yes. All accredited universities in Georgia require foreign students to hold valid health insurance for the duration of their studies. Some universities offer a group policy at registration; others require students to bring their own.

Does the policy cover me outside Georgia — for example, if I fly home for the holidays?

Student policies are designed for coverage inside Georgia. For travel back to your home country or other countries during breaks, your home-country insurance or a separate travel policy applies.

What if I’m only a visiting student for one semester?

Semester-only or exchange policies are available. Coverage starts on the first day of your registration window and ends on the last day of exams or your visa expiry, whichever is earlier.

Can I use my home country’s health insurance instead?

Only if your home policy is explicitly accepted by your Georgian university and meets the minimum requirements. Most European and US health plans do not meet the Georgian acceptance criteria; a local Georgian-issued policy is the reliable path.
